The Art of Sculpting your Horse’s Behaviour – Shaping

Posted in: Announcements, Classical Equitation, Clicker Training, Equine Training

Shaping behaviour is the gradual sculpting of a specific behaviour whose very early beginnings arise out of the large pool of behaviours that occur naturally in the animal.

It involves changing behaviour by reinforcing variations which are approximations towards the final goal behaviour

Shaping behaviour is a skill that can be learnt, just the same as any other skill we become good at. First and foremost we need to understand how the laws of learning work. When we learn how to utilise those laws to our advantage, we can choose how we would like to train from an educated standpoint.

Once you both understand those laws and have experienced shaping behaviour in an animal, seen the enjoyment that the animal can experience through learning via shaping using positive reinforcement plus seen how fast that learning occurs, you won’t want to train your animals in any other way!
